State Department of Transportation’s (DOT) require inspections for safety assessments. The Department of Transportation relies on appointed and licensed auto repair shops to conduct vehicle-only inspections. Sunshine Auto Repair is certified to conduct these inspections.
- Oil, Lube, and Filter
Engine oil, or motor oil, is the oil used for lubricating the various parts of your truck’s internal combustion engine. The oil reduces wear, lessens friction, cools the engine parts, and inhibits corrosion. One of the cheapest and most effective ways to prolong the life of your truck’s engine is to have its oil and oil filters changed regularly. Oil changes keep engines healthy. With regular oil changes, your engine will run stronger for longer.

Belts & Hoses
Timing belts and serpentine belts are the most common types of belts in trucks.
- A timing belt (also referred to as the camshaft drive belt or the Gilmer belt) is a notched belt that allows the crankshaft to turn the camshaft. Failure of the timing belt would lead to failure of the engine. A loose timing belt could lead to its slipping. When slipped, valves will open at the wrong time putting them at the risk of being struck by the pistons. To avoid this, have your timing belts inspected and serviced regularly.
- A drive belt transfers power from the engine to the front mounted accessories such as the cooling fan, power steering pump, air injection pump, the air conditioning compressor and more. Failure of the drive belt means that all the engine accessories it’s powering will stop working leading to overheating of the engine. To prevent this from happening, have the belt regularly checked for wear, cracks and stripping.
- Hoses (or coolant hoses) are the heater and radiator hoses (upper and lower). The hoses facilitate the flow of coolant between the radiator, engine, and heating block. Old and worn out hoses can easily burst resulting in an overheated engine. To prevent this from happening, have the hoses inspected for cracks.
Remember, working belts and hoses will lead to a properly working engine.
Cooling System
Although a truck’s engine operates most efficiently at high temperatures, the surplus heat produced during combustion can damage engine parts. To keep the engine safe from the surplus heat, trucks come with a cooling system. The system helps the engine maintain the required temperature and release any surplus heat to the environment.
The cooling system is made up of various parts that work harmoniously. These parts are the radiator, fan, pump, pressure cap, hoses, thermostat, and overflow tank. Failure of any of the parts will result in a poorly functioning cooling system.
To have a properly working cooling system (and thus a healthy engine), consider having periodic servicing of the parts that make up the system. At Sunshine Auto Repair, we can service or replace (if necessary) radiators, fans, water pumps, hoses, thermostats and pressure caps.
Diesel
Although diesel engines don’t require tune-ups and tend to last longer than gasoline engines, they do require regular maintenance. Typical maintenance tasks include:
- Changing the oil & filter
- Changing the air filter
- Changing the fuel filter
- Bleeding the fuel system
- Draining the water separators
- Refilling the urea injection system –
This is where your truck’s combustion of fuel occurs. The ignition, which takes place in a combustion chamber, provides force to the pistons, turbine blades, or a nozzle. The engine provides power that drives your truck. With a poorly operating engine, you will have a poor performing truck.
Exhaust
An exhaust system is a piping that directs exhaust gases away from the internal combustion engine to the outdoors. A truck’s exhaust system is made up of one or more exhaust pipes. An exhaust system can be modified to increase engine power (and performance), reduce pollution, or reduce noise. Also, a properly operating exhaust system is required for operator safety.
To get the most from your truck, you need regular exhaust service. For exhaust repairs, exhaust modification, or exhaust replacement, call 619-444-1696 or visit Sunshine Auto Repair today.
Water Pumps
A water pump is a vital part of your truck cooling system. A water pump is a centrifugal pump that circulates fluid whenever the engine is running. A belt connected to the engine’s crankshaft drives the pump. Water pumps have vanes that fling the fluid to the outside of the pump (using centrifugal force) where it can enter the internal combustion engine. After going through the engine and the cylinder head, the fluid flows back to the water pump.
If the water pump develops a leak or the hub becomes loose and noisy, you need to have it replaced. Faulty water pumps will lead to poor cooling of the internal combustion engine. To have faulty water pumps repaired or replaced, call 619-444-1696 or visit Sunshine Auto Repair today.

Our Suspension services include:
Air Spring
Air suspension is used in place of conventional steel springs in heavy vehicle applications such as buses and trucks. It is broadly used on semi-trailers. The purpose of air suspension is to provide a smooth, constant ride quality. Modern electronically controlled systems almost always feature self-leveling along with raising and lowering functions. Although traditionally called air bags or air bellows, the correct term is air spring (although these terms are also used to describe just the rubber bellows element with its end plates). Trust the experts at Sunshine Auto Repair when your truck’s air bag suspension needs service, repair, or replacement. Call us at 619-444-1696 to schedule an appointment.
Equalizers
Suspension equalizers are an effective aftermarket innovation for rear leaf suspensions. The equalizers are designed to aid in the carrying ability of your truck. Equalizers have the following advantages: fuel economy, increased safety, increased power, reduced tire wear, improved steering, and improved braking.
Most equalizer kits include U-bolts, Equalizer Bars, Shackle Plates, Greasable Bolts, Rollers, Spring Washers, Washers, U-bolt Plates, and Nylon Locking Nuts. For all your suspension equalizer needs, visit or call Sunshine Auto Repair in El Cajon, CA 92020 today.
Hangers
Hangers are an effective way to enhance your truck’s driving stability, handling, and suspension response. Hangers lower your truck’s center of gravity, protecting it from rollovers in turns and corners and help you modify your truck’s ground clearance. Whether you want to lower or raise your truck using hangers, call 619-444-1696 or visit Sunshine Auto Repair today.
Shocks
Shock absorbers are mechanical devices designed to smooth out shock impulses, thus reducing the effects of traveling over rough roads. Shocks convert kinetic energy that is formed when a vehicle travels over rough ground into another form of energy.
With shocks, you will be able to take your truck to places you never thought possible. Shocks work together with springs (they damp spring oscillations) to give your truck the best overall performance and the ability to carry the maximum load. For all your shock servicing, shock repairs and shock replacement needs, call or visit Sunshine Auto Repair today.
Torque Arms & Walking Beams
A torque arm is a metal arm attached between a drive axle and the vehicle’s frame. Torque arms prevent axle rotation in hub motors. It prevents the wheels from trying to rotate the axle relative to the vehicle’s frame under acceleration (or in the opposite direction during braking).
A walking beam is an oscillating lever that pivots on a central axis and uses internal cam technology to transmit linear stroke in two directions (produces a reciprocating or reversible motion).
For all your torque arm and walking beam servicing needs, visit Sunshine Auto Repair in El Cajon, CA 92020.

Air Brakes
Air brakes (or compressed air brake systems) stop heavy-duty trucks quickly. In this type of brakes, compressed air is used to apply pressure to the brake pad thus stopping a truck. These brakes are a powerful and effective alternative to hydraulic brakes – thus their common use in trucks, buses, and trains. Although powerful and effective, airbrakes need consistent, thorough maintenance. For all your airbrake needs, contact 619-444-1696 or visit Sunshine Auto Repair today. At Sunshine Auto Repair, we have qualified and experienced mechanics who will work on your truck’s air brakes.
Brake Maintenance & Repair
Truck brakes are much more powerful than car brakes. Faulty truck brakes put the truck driver, the load, and other road users at risk. If you are not confident in your truck’s ability to stop firm and straight when you hit the brakes, then it is time to have them checked and replaced if necessary. At Sunshine Auto Repair, we will diagnose your truck and fleet’s brake problems and offer high quality brake work. Visit our auto shop or call us today 619-444-1696.
Hydraulic Brakes
A hydraulic brake is a type of braking system that uses brake fluid to transfer pressure to the brake pads. Although most heavy trucks use air brakes, some trucks have hydraulic brakes. A hydraulic brake consists of the following: a brake pedal, a push rod, a cylinder chamber, and brake pads. With time, the hydraulic brakes components wear out and thus need replacement. For all your hydraulic brake system needs, visit Sunshine Auto Repair or call us at 619-444-1696. We boast the most experienced hydraulic brake experts in the region.
